Ask any agent who’s been around a while, and they’ll have a story about the deal that got away. Not one lost to a competing offer, but one already theirs, under contract, days from closing, when the buyer walked. Financing fell through. The inspection spooked them. They changed their mind. Whatever the reason, the deal you counted on is gone, along with the commission you’d already spent in your head.

It’s one of the most deflating parts of this career, and no one warns you how often it happens. But two agents can lose the same deal and walk away completely differently. For one, it’s a rough afternoon. For the other, it’s the moment they start wondering if they’re built for this at all. Same dead deal. Everything around the agent is different.

It’s the job, not your failure. The first thing worth making peace with is that this will keep happening, and it says nothing about your ability.

And the numbers prove it. Deals dying isn’t a sign you’re doing something wrong, it’s just the market you’re working in. In September alone, 14.5% of homes under contract fell through, nearly the highest share on record. That’s happening to top producers and brand-new agents alike.

Financing collapses. Inspections rattle people. Life changes in the weeks between contract and closing.

The very best agent in your market still watches deals fall apart, because so much of what drives a buyer to walk sits entirely outside anyone’s control. The trap is treating each one as evidence that you’re not cut out for this work. Do that, and you bleed confidence fast, and confidence is the fuel this whole business runs on.

The agents who build long careers learn to separate the outcome from their sense of self. A deal dying isn’t proof you failed. It’s proof you’re doing the job, because the job includes this.

“The agents who thrive aren’t tougher than everyone else. They’re just not doing it alone.”

One dead deal shouldn’t sink your whole month. This is where the real difference quietly reveals itself. When a backout feels like a catastrophe, the backout usually isn’t the actual problem. The problem is that nothing else was there to absorb it.

If one lost deal can derail your entire month, the issue isn’t that one deal, it’s that you were carrying only that one. That’s a structural problem, not a personal one. The agents who barely flinch at a backout have steady lead flow, several deals moving at once, and support handling the work that would otherwise swallow their days.

So when one collapses, they’re frustrated for an afternoon, and then they turn back to the other five things already in motion. The aim was never to prevent deals from dying. It’s to build a business where no single deal holds the power to take you down with it.

You shouldn’t have to absorb it alone. This is the part that changes everything, and it’s the part most agents miss. When a deal falls apart, is there someone you can call? Someone who has seen it a hundred times, who can tell you whether it’s salvageable, who can help you get the listing back on the market or the buyer back on track before the momentum is gone?

Or are you sitting alone at your kitchen table, piecing it together from scratch, carrying the entire weight of it by yourself? That gap, between having a real team behind you and going it completely solo, is the single biggest factor in whether these setbacks end up building you or breaking you.

The agents who thrive through the hard stretches aren’t tougher or more talented than everyone else. They simply aren’t doing it alone. And the thing worth sitting with is that this part, unlike the backouts themselves, is actually a choice you get to make.

So if you’re tired of absorbing every setback by yourself, of wondering whether a dead deal means you’re failing when it may just mean you’re unsupported, it might be worth a conversation. I’ve built the kind of team I wish I’d had in my early years, the pipeline, the systems, and the people who pick up the phone when a deal falls through.
